PM Modi Blames Partition for Pahalgam Attack, Calls for Stronger Action Against Terrorism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attributed the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, to the 1947 Partition. Speaking at an event in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on May 27, Modi stated that the division of India led to the first terrorist attack in Kashmir and the occupation of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). He emphasized that had India followed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s advice to continue military action until PoK was reclaimed, the country might have avoided decades of conflict.

During his speech, Modi reflected on India’s military history, asserting that the Indian Army has consistently defeated Pakistan in direct conflicts. He claimed that Pakistan, realizing it could not win a conventional war, resorted to proxy warfare by supporting terrorist groups. The Prime Minister also highlighted Operation Sindoor, a precision strike on nine terror camps in Pakistan conducted by India on May 7, two weeks after the Pahalgam attack. The operation led to four days of military action, which concluded with an agreement between India and Pakistan to halt hostilities on May 10.

Modi stated, “If we had killed these Mujahideens; if we had listened to Sardar Patel, he wanted the Army to not stop until we get back PoK”. He further criticized Pakistan’s state-sponsored terrorism, pointing out that militants killed after May 6 were given state honors, with Pakistani flags draped over their coffins.

The Pahalgam attack, which occurred on April 22, is one of the deadliest in recent years. The attack targeted tourists and civilians, raising concerns about security in the region. Modi linked the incident to historical decisions made during Partition, arguing that the failure to fully secure Kashmir in 1947 led to ongoing instability. He reiterated that India’s economic rise—from the 11th largest economy in 2014 to the 4th largest today—has strengthened its global position, making it more capable of addressing security threats.
